Half-Century Art Journey Dazzles at The Vista Center for the Arts
‘Timeless Visions’: John Weecks’ 50-year art journey, free to the public this October 2023
SURPRISE, AZ (Oct. 6, 2023) – A night that celebrated artistry and legacy, The Vista Center for the Arts saw a turnout of over 50 art enthusiasts at the opening reception of “Timeless Visions” on Friday, October 6, 2023. The event showcased the eclectic collection of award-winning artist John Simon Weecks, spanning over 50 years of his distinguished career as an artist. All the art there was by Weecks.
Upon entering, guests were greeted by the sprawling walls of the Vista that elegantly framed the Timeless Visions exhibit. Moving through the hallway, modern contemporary paintings on one side and intricate European and Greek-inspired wood carvings on the other encapsulated the attendees’ attention. These masterpieces transitioned into an Americana theme, leading to the centerpiece – the “Celestial Odyssey” mural, a canvas that narrates a unique story of evolution over 17 years with multiple themes painted over one another. Favorites from the evening included the “Celestial Odyssey” mural measuring 48″ x 102″, the socially charged piece “Primal Ponderings” highlighting renewable energy and Tesla, and the award-winning carving, “Marty”. Amanda Rosas, Theater Manager, and Ryne B. S., Box Office/Operations staff, played pivotal roles in setting up this successful event.
Greg Elson, one of the attendees, exclaimed, “This is incredible; John is truly the definition of an Artist.” Elson became one of the many proud owners of Weecks’ original pieces by night’s end. Fellow attendee, Ryan Young, praised the exhibit as one of the most remarkable he’s seen, expressing his eagerness to revisit it with his girlfriend. Moreover, the exhibit was graced by the presence of a board member from The Vista Center for the Arts, and three representatives from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
The theme of the night? Disbelief and awe. As guests walked in, their first question was often, “which pieces did John create?” This response underlined Weecks’ profound versatility and capability to traverse numerous styles and themes over his career, evident in every piece displayed. The evening’s agenda was rich: after a self-guided tour, Kara Polling, the Community Liaison from the Dysart School District, introduced the venue, and then the man of the hour, John Weecks. In a heartfelt address, Weecks shared his artistic vision and expressed gratitude to event organizers, including Strait Talk PR, the Law Office of Debbie Weecks, Weecks Productions, and The Vista. The event culminated with a personal tour led by Weecks, giving attendees an intimate understanding of each piece.
For those who missed the opening, “Timeless Visions” will remain accessible to the public every Tuesday through Friday in October 2023 from 10am – 2pm at The Vista Center for the Arts located at 15660 N Parkview Pl, Surprise, AZ 85374. Admission is free. Attendees are kindly asked to check in at the box office upon arrival for a private viewing experience.
